On the island of Malapascua in the Philippines, Anna Oposa and her team are working with local fisherman to create a nature reserve where thresher sharks can thrive. These sharks are famous for their long tails which they use to whip and stun their prey. Every day, pelagic thresher sharks head to Monad Shoal, a sunken island just off the coast of Malapascua, where other fish “clean” them of their external parasites. This remarkable sight is popular with divers but the numbers of thresher sharks are dwindling and Anna is spearheading the campaign to protect this incredible species in the Philippines.
The Kakapo, or owl parrot, is a large flightless bird found on two New Zealand islands: Codfish Island and Anchor Island. In the 1990s their numbers dropped to as low as 50 birds but this figure is now on the rise. Deidre Vercoe is responsible for running a conservation scheme which monitors each one of the remaining birds to keep them safe and to encourage them to breed.
