Gerry is turning forty, and after finding a letter he wrote to himself ten years earlier, he becomes acutely aware of everything he has failed to accomplish. Clearly not the family man, Gerry attempts to prove that he's the other type of “awesome forty.” But when his wild night out doesn't go as planned, Gerry takes drastic measures to meet the expectations set out in his own letter. Meanwhile, Simon's ferret goes missing and Lisa wants to impress the chairman of the board of trustees by putting on an elaborate fun fair in his honour, which quickly devolves into a complete disaster.
Gerry accompanies students on a leadership retreat to a nature centre where he meets the beautiful staff member, Jasmine. As Gerry and Robert engage in a misguided competition to win her affection, the two find themselves lost in the woods and in pretty dire straights. Meanwhile, when Lisa finds out that Trudy is running a morbid “death pool” gambling ring, she attempts to shut it down, only to learn that she's the odds on favourite to die next. And Simon and Frank's innocent game of rugby spoons takes an ugly turn.
When he attempts to reign in a bratty student, Gerry is faced with the wrath of his notoriously overprotective and obnoxious mother. After an innocent interaction with her takes an unpleasant and threatening turn, Gerry goes to great lengths to protect his reputation. Upon realizing that she has fallen into the role of staff “punching bag,” Bobbi attempts to transfer the title onto another staff member, but her awkward and cruel efforts only further seal her title. Meanwhile, Ricki sells pencils to Robert and drives a hard bargain.

Gerry's been given another coaching assignment, but this time he's helping Ricki prepare for a fencing tournament, and he couldn't be less interested. After an uncharacteristic heart to heart, however, Gerry changes his tunes and assures Ricki that he'll get her to the tournament – a task that proves more difficult than he had anticipated. In an effort to capitalize on Dwyer's recent divorce, Bobbi invites him over for dinner and attempts to seduce him the only way she knows how. Poorly. Robert, meanwhile, is consumed with uncovering his lunch thief.
Gerry has big weekend plans for a fantasy baseball draft when he's told he has to cover Saturday detention. He ends up monitoring a motley crew of Xavier students while trying to make an early escape to salvage his fantasy picks before he misses the draft. In an effort to bury the hatchet and come to terms with Lisa's appointment as the new principal, Robert and Lisa have an impromptu heart to heart.
After Gerry has an unpleasant run-in with a unionized construction worker, he decides he wants to form a teachers union at Xavier. Some early calculations suggest that the vote is a dead split, with Simon left as the swing. In an effort to win Simon's vote, Gerry agrees to host Simon's mom's party at his apartment, which he comes to regret upon realizing that he's hosting a swingers' “key party.” Meanwhile, Robert reads the riot act when Malik skips out early on his janitorial duties and Lisa is smitten with Trudy's brother, but finds herself uncomfortable with their close relationship.
