เรื่องราวในภาคที่สามนี้ คือการสืบทอดบัลลังก์ของกษัตริย์เมืองฟาร์อะเวย์แลนด์ เมื่อกษัตริย์ฮาร์โรลด์ทรงประชวร เชร็คจึงต้องทำหน้าที่หาผู้สืบทอดราชบัลลังก์ที่เหมาะสมมาแทนที่ตัวเอง เพราะมิฉะนั้นแล้ว เชร็คจะต้องจากบ้านที่หนองน้ำอันสงบสุขมารับตำแหน่งอันใหญ่หลวงนี้ เชร็คพร้อมด้วยสหายสุดเลิฟอย่างเจ้าลาดองกี้และเจ้าเหมียวพุสส์ อิน บู้ตส์ จึงออกตามหาเจ้าชายอาร์ตี้ พระญาติของเจ้าหญิงฟิโอน่าให้มาเป็นกษัตริย์ ในขณะเดียวกันทางด้านของเมืองฟาร์อะเวย์นั้นก็เกิดเรื่องร้าย เมื่อเจ้าชายชาร์มมิ่งตัวร้ายได้ยกกองทัพมาบุกเมืองเพื่อชิงบัลลังก์ เจ้าหญิงฟิโอน่าและเสด็จแม่พระราชินีลิลเลี่ยนจึงต้องผนึกกำลังต้านทานไว้ เพื่อรอวันที่เชร็คจะพากษัตริย์ที่แท้จริงกลับมากอบกู้เมือง
