A mother lynx feeds on freshly caught prey with her cubs, agile chamoix leap along mountain ledges, bee-eaters dig nesting holes in vineyards, black storks bring up their young on narrow ridges. From the rugged peaks of the Alps and the dark woods of the Black Forest to the sandstone cliffs of Saxonian Switzerland, Germany's mountains are home to very special animals. The episode Mountains from the four-part series Wild Germany shows a world full of breath-taking images. We witness the first few days of baby marmots in Alpine meadows, inexperienced and unaware of the dangers lurking outside the den. The opportunity that the golden eagle in the cliff face has been waiting for. Taking to the air, it glides over the steeply sloping pasture. The older marmots recognize the danger and send out shrill alarm whistles. Will the younger marmots heed the warnings in time? It's been more than 150 years since the last lynx was seen in Germany. After a reintroduction project in the Czech Republic, the first big cats crossed the border into the Bavarian forest. Similar projects in the Harz mountains have also brought the lynx back to Northern Germany. Only 30km South of Dresden, majestic table mountains stretch into the sky: Saxonian Switzerland with its unspoilt rocky cliffs and towers. Habitat of peregrine falcons and white-throated dippers, as well as the shy and seldom seen dormouse. The spectacular beauty and diversity of form of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains are unique in Europe. The film shows the magnificence of the mountains in the different seasons and the rich variety of flora and fauna. Unique animal footage rounds off the portrait of landscapes which have much more than just barren rocks to offer.

To the North

Benny Rebel approaches a big cat in the semi desert with caution. An Asiatic cheetah is like an icon of Iranian nature. The carnivore accepts Benny in its closer environment. The photographer takes breath taking shots. Rewarded in this way Rebel continues his challenging expedition in a high mood. Deep in the desert he manages to come close to the last Wild Ass, so called Onager. The horse like animals are very shy and rare. From his hideouts Benny observes chinkaras, antelopes and impressive horned wild sheep in the mountains. Passing the snow topped Mount Damavand he reaches the green north part of Iran. In the oldest national park Golestan not only massive Marals and wild boars roam. Here also Persian leopards and brown bears crossing their ways. Near the mystical forest of Persia the journey ends at the biggest inland lake of the world: the Caspian Sea. There Benny stalks on the pink flamingoes which gather there for feeding. The number and variety of species and landscapes of Iran is overwhelming but also endangered. On his photo and film expedition Benny Rebel documents the natural resources of Iran - also, to convince the government of his home country to protect their unique treasures of nature and culture.

Between Denmark and Latvia

The Baltic Sea is the youngest on earth and didn't evolve until after the last Ice Age. It seems so familiar, yet offers many surprises. The shores of the Baltic Sea are still shaped by wind and waves. The first episode takes us from Denmark's northernmost corner, via the Darss Peninsula in Germany and Lithuania's Curonian Spit to the endless beaches of Latvia. The film begins at the gateway to the Baltic Sea at Denmark's northernmost point: Skagen. It is here that the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet and form a divide made of sand between Skagerrak and Kattegat. In June, hundreds of seals gather together on the lonely island of Anholt between Denmark and Sweden. It is the largest seal colony in the Baltic Sea. No camera team has ever been able to get so close to the animals as nature filmmaker Christoph Hauschild. Using remote-control cameras, he and his team have been able to capture intimate images of the way the seals live over and beneath water. For the very first time they follow a mother with her young to swimming lessons and in doing so, capture very emotional moments of these timid creatures. Most of the freshwater from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea, flows through the Store Baelt. In this sound, the underwater world is characterised by many species of saltwater loving fish. In the waters around Sjaelland, the largest stocks of harbour porpoise in the Baltic Sea. In 2016, the labyrinth of islands, sounds and fjords attracted two dolphins. They spent several months in the fjords of Flensburg and Kiel. Astounding images: they show familiar to us from the Mediterranean, but not something we would necessarily expect from the Baltic Sea.
