Europe is a densely packed continent, with some 700 million residents living across 50 countries. It's famed for its ancient cities and civilisations, but is sometimes overlooked when it comes to the natural world. But there's no doubt that the continent is a treasure trove of natural beauty, a mosaic of landscapes each filled with their own unique animal communities. If you were planning a bucket list trip of the natural wonders of Europe, you'd only have to ask yourself one question: where would you start?
Forests are dark, shady habitats, realms of shadows perfect for predators to lurk. The dense plant growth facilitates a wealth of prey species, and cunning predators of all shapes and sizes have adapted to exploit every niche. Whether crawling on the forest floor, gliding through the trees or stalking the shadows in between, hunters have mastered the terrain in every type of forest imagina-ble. And they're not just stealthy, they're also some of the most enigmatic and beautiful creatures on the planet.
You think plants are boring or passive? Far from it! They use complex reactions to respond to light, sound and touch. And like in the animal kingdom, different species have developed a near unending list of strategies to ensure their legacy is passed on. Plants have evolved tricks to beat the ele-ments, animal enemies or even other plants: From thorns and spines to poisons and even live-in bodyguards. This two-part series shows the survival strategies of our green “roommates” we share the planet with.
Manatees, sea cows, these gentle giants go by several names. They were once thought to be beautiful mermaids that could lure sailors to their deaths, though they probably won't win too many beauty contests. To retain their weight, manatees need to eat for 8 hours and consume 8% of their bodyweight every day. And keeping eating also means keeping moving! Thanks to their tolerance of human visitors, manatees have mates everywhere, working tirelessly to ensure they roam the world for generations to come.
From mysterious lynx to athletic servals and water-bound jungle cats, the little cats of the world are some of the most fascinating and ruthless predators on the planet.

Each one finds its own way to exploit and conserve the available food and water in a daily struggle for survival.
