After one of Gerry's students skips a detention for a theatre rehearsal, Gerry confronts the student mid-rehearsal and unleashes a barrage of vitriol that impresses director Emma so much so that she immediately fires the student, offering Gerry the starring role instead. Will this be the birth of a brilliant thespian? In an effort to motivate her lazy students, Bobbi equips them all with heart monitors. At first, her efforts appear to be successful, but Bobbi soon finds herself unintentionally tracking a different type of student exercise. Nisha's been having trouble getting her class to respect her authority, but has figured out that she can manipulate them into paying attention by crying in the classroom. Robert cracks down on Nisha's unconventional tactic, only to find himself taking a page out of her book.
It's almost March break and all of the staff members seem to have saved enough money for a vacation, except for Gerry. In a desperate effort to make some fast cash for a trip of his own, he decides to take a side job teaching in a prison. Gerry manages to establish a surprisingly positive rapport with the inmates, only to find himself the accidental drug mule for one of his new students. Meanwhile, Simon has been teaching an ESL class and becomes convinced one of his students has a much better grasp of the English language than he's been letting on. Nisha has been tutoring students at their homes, but finds the work environments difficult to navigate.
Gerry sees dollar signs when he learns that young Hayden's father is sick, very rich, and planning to leave something to Hayden's favourite staff members. Already established as Hayden's Number One teacher, Gerry awaits his monetary gift with eager anticipation, only to discover that his ‘gift' is legal guardianship of Hayden. But Gerry's initial disappointment is quickly remedied by the financial contribution that accompanies said guardianship. Unfortunately, raising a child turns out to be a tad more expensive than Gerry had anticipated. Meanwhile, Robert becomes co-principal and takes every opportunity to ensure that all staff and students understand that he is no longer Lisa's subordinate. Nisha jumps in on some innocent student games during recess, only to injure herself and ruin everything.
Kate becomes increasingly suspicious Nathan Jr.'s strange behaviour. Meanwhile, a promising book proposal in a pile of make-work from Sloane could be Kate's ticket out of the doghouse. Kate looks to Anne for some parenting advice, but the answers she needs come from a surprising source.
