Early September of 2008 saw radical imagery on the hurricane maps of the Atlantic four named tropical storms, swirling in a train across the ocean. Angry Planet was there as three of them made landfall as hurricanes in the US. We filmed gustaf in Louisiana, Hanna in North Carolina, then flew with the USAF Hurricane Hunters into Ike over cuba, and met it again as it made a wild destructive landfall in Galveston, Texas.
The most notorious volcanic explosion in history came from the small island of Krakatoa, off the coast of Java, The tiny island was pulverized and the giant explosion was felt half way around the world. Java is at the heart of the Ring of Fire, and so has seen many volcanoes, mud slides and earthquakes through its long history.

And it really is still possible to travel there by camel caravan, riding the infamous Ships of the Desert. Italy is one of the very few nations in the world that regularly gets three major extreme natural phenomena volcanos, flooding, and avalanches. Eastern flanks of the volcano to slip by up to two metres, and many houses on the flanks of the volcano experienced structural damage. The eruption also completely destroyed the Rifugio Sapienza, on the southern flank of the volcano. The Rifugio was the site of a cable car station which had previously been destroyed in the 1983 eruption both have now been rebuilt. The most recent eruption was in November 2006.
