Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear (1868-1942) was Hipólito Yrigoyen's successor as president between his two non-consecutive terms. They were both from the same political party (U.C.R), but Alvear was more conservative and came from one of Argentina's wealthiest families, pleasing this way the country's aristocracy who were dissatisfied with Yrigoyen's populist presidency.
