廣東武術界名人黃麒英自兒子黃飛鴻（成龍）小時候起就嚴格訓練其習武，可惜黃飛鴻少年時代年輕氣盛，經常用三腳貓功夫在外惹事生非，武學上一直無大的長進。直到某次較量中被人打得落花流水且受到侮辱，黃飛鴻才發誓要拜蘇乞兒（袁小田）為師好好習武。由於蘇乞兒懶於收徒，加上對黃飛鴻的人品很不信任，他開出了種種苛刻條件。為表決心，黃飛鴻一一應允並努力將它們全都實現，終以真心將蘇乞兒打動，令其將醉拳傳授給了他，黃飛鴻漸從一名莽撞的少年成長為一個見義勇為的年輕人。
