年輕的心理醫生比爾因為病人蜜雪在他面前跳窗自殺，深受打擊。 為了撫平自己波動的情緒，他來到洛杉磯，找到他的老友鮑伯。鮑伯也是心理醫生，他將一些病人聚在週一訓練他們能舒坦的面對其他人，但次日，鮑伯被殘酷地謀殺了，身中38刀。比爾開始調查，發現一名叫蘿絲的神秘女子，比爾找到蘿絲，得知她患有三重分裂人格，並受人控制。原來控制蘿絲的竟然是她的哥哥，她的哥哥由於痛失自己的親弟弟，於是，強迫蘿絲裝扮成已死的弟弟。當比爾發現了這一切，蘿絲的哥哥也開始向他下手了。本片的恐怖氣氛主要通過音樂及懸念鏡頭來傳達。
