本片是馬汀史柯西斯的經典作品之一，改編自前世界中量級拳王傑克拉莫塔真人真事，導演馬汀史柯西斯刻意以黑白片突顯劇中衝突，在1980年是非常大膽的拍攝手法，勞勃狄尼洛則因本片獲得奧斯卡和金球獎的最佳男主角。 拳擊手傑克拉莫塔出手勇猛，在拳壇被稱為”布朗克斯公牛”。桀傲不遜的他由於不願向黑道靠攏，以致無法獲得拳王挑戰的資格，後來他只好故意輸掉比賽以換取挑戰資格。但是他順利取得世界拳王寶座後，多疑的傑克懷疑妻子和弟弟偷腥，對他們大打出手。 在看破名利後，傑克決定退出拳壇經營夜總會，卻因色情交易而入獄，妻離子散，歷經滄桑的拳王出獄後只能在夜總會主持度過餘生。 勞勃狄尼洛在片中除了展現結實體魄和苦練的拳技，又增胖二十幾公斤，驚人的演技和外貌自然變化，本片堪稱是他影壇的代表作。
