一名因憧憬成为大学足球队选手而进入都市大学就读的乡下青年，希望别人的喜爱。他常常在校内蹦跳着走路，又以奇妙的姿态边走边跟人握手。可是他这些装模作样的动作却引起同学们的反感，把他当呆子看待。但哈罗德不以为忤，反而再接再厉，渴望有朝一日成为大众情人。看到他傻头傻脑的样子，跟他住在同一公寓里的姑娘佩姬好心向他揭露了同学们为了利用他而故意给他戴高帽，骗他出钱请客的真相。哈罗德听她这么一说，情绪登时低落下来。但在佩姬鼓励下，哈罗德重新振作，加入了足球俱乐部。不久，哈罗德的大学跟对手尤宁大学展开一场对抗赛，罗依德只有坐在候补队员席上干着急。在离比赛结束只剩三分钟时，一名主力球员受伤倒地。哈罗德再也坐不住，主动请缨出场，出人意料的是，哈罗德的球技十分精湛，在球场上满场飞奔，奋不顾身，终于使球队反败为胜。场内登时欢声雷动，这时，哈罗德却晕倒在佩姬的怀抱之中。
