从华盛顿的斯波坎搬到波特兰的一个垃圾场不久，开始新生活的十五岁少年查理，并不像其他男生对这个世界跃跃欲试，因从小母亲不在，他一直在寻求安稳和归属。其脑海中挥之不去的是他童年时对一个姑姑的记忆，那是他所能感受到的最亲密的母性。他把自己的情感寄托在一匹叫皮特的赛马身上，别人劝他不要投入太多的感情，赛马的意义就是赛跑，当一匹赛马年老体弱跑不动的时候，它也就失去自己存在的意义了。然而对于查理而言，这匹赛马陪他走过最低谷的时段，对他来说意义重大，于是他在得知皮特输了几场比赛即将面临被送到墨西哥屠宰之后，一咬牙把皮特从马贩子的手里偷走，连夜奔赴多年未联系的姑姑家。
