历史
本片描述的是遥远的公元1066年，法王威廉一世打败萨克逊人，统治英国，利用强势的铁骑及僧侣压制穷苦的萨克逊农民。经过一百多年传位于他的孙子——亨利二世（彼得．奥图尔饰），但亨利二世有个挚友名叫汤姆斯（理查德．伯顿饰）是个萨克逊人。汤姆斯在亨利二世接位后，被封作首相，并凭着其聪明才智越过英伦海峡，不费一兵一卒便让法王割让三地，得到亨利二世的信赖与重用。亨利二世向来与教会不合，此时，正逢教主去世，为求国家安定，亨利二世毅然派汤姆斯前往接任教主职位。汤姆斯接管神职后，反而要比做首相更了解民间的疾苦，得到民众的爱戴，并寻回萨克逊人的自我，引得亨利二世的猜忌，借贪污之名加以陷害。汤姆斯只得流落它乡，苦行修身，多年后回国依然受到国人的爱戴，引起骑士的恐慌予以杀害。
