Xác Johnny Squares, chàng ca sĩ nhạc rock nghiện ngập, đã được tìm thấy với kết luận dùng thuốc quá liều. Nhưng khi bắt tay vào điều tra, Harry nhận ra rằng có rất nhiều bằng chứng chứng tỏ rằng đây không phải một tai nạn thông thường. Ban đầu, Harry để mắt tới Peter Swan, người đạo diễn các video của chàng ca sĩ xấu số. Anh cũng gặp mặt phóng viên truyền hình, Samantha Walker sau khi bị đe dọa. Rồi Harry phát hiện ra Swan và một vài người khác đang chơi trò chơi gọi là “hồ chết người”, ở đó họ lập danh sách những người có sức khỏe không tốt hoặc làm nghề nguy hiểm cao. Và Squares nằm trong danh sách tử thần đó. Harry cũng không bị loại trừ và luôn có những kẻ bám theo anh...
