Bộ phim chia thành ba hồi: “Little” - “Chiron” - “Black”, ba cái tên được sử dụng để gọi cùng một người, từ khi Chiron còn nhỏ đến lúc trưởng thành. Người xem lần lượt theo dõi nhân vật chính bước qua các giai đoạn của cuộc đời, anh loay hoay tìm vị trí cho mình cùng những câu hỏi về giới tính khi xuất thân là cậu bé da đen, nghèo, đồng tính và không có bạn bè. Liên tiếp bị bạn bè trêu trọc, bắt nạt, rồi mặc cảm về bản thân, Chiron lúc nào cũng lủi thủi với ánh mắt luôn nhìn xuống.
