마이클 도어시는 20년간 배우생활을 하고 있지만, 연기에 대한 지나친 열정 탓으로 연출자에 대한 주문을 꼬치꼬치 따지는 등 그의 성격 때문에 매번 오디션에 떨어지고 만다. 어느날 오디션을 받게 되던 날 여장을 하고 가게 되고 동료배우가 맡으려다 실패한 드라마의 배역을 맡게 된다. 여자배우로서 인기를 얻게 된 마이클은 함께 공연하게 된 주인공 줄리를 보고 사랑에 빠지게 된다.
