훈장까지 받은 이라크 전쟁 영웅 브랜든 레너드 킹 하사는 주민들의 축하 속에 고향인 텍사스주의 작은 마을로 돌아온다. 그는 이라크 참전 동료이자 죽마고우인 스티브와 가족들의 도움 속에서 새롭고 평화로운 삶을 시작하려고 한다. 하지만, 이런 브랜든의 뜻과는 달리, 육군은 그에게 전역을 중단시키고 이라크 전으로 복귀할 것을 명령한다. 이미 전쟁을 통해 많은 전우를 잃고 괴로워하던 브랜든은 재복무를 거부하고, 결국 무단이탈로 이어지고 만다. 이러한 상황의 갑작스런 변화는, 가족간의 유대, 우정의 힘, 사랑의 한계, 명예의 가치 등 그가 믿고 있는 모든 것들을 시험에 들게 하는데...
