UCLA 메디컬 플라자의 종양학과 닥터 마이클 레이놀즈는 아름다운 아내와 귀여운 딸을 가진 성공한 젊은 의사이다. 레이놀즈는 종양학과 과장 승진을 앞두고 16살 짜리 소년 블루의 진찰을 의뢰받는다. 인디언과 백인 사이의 혼혈아인 블루는 자식들과 양어머니를 상습적으로 구타하던 양아버지를 권총으로 살해하고 소년원에 복역중인 살인범이다. 그런데 소년원 원장은 블루가 생명이 2개월 밖에 안 남은 말기 암환자임을 알고 화학 요법의 실험 대상으로 국립의료원에 보내려고 하는 인물이다. 블루는 청진기를 이용해 원장과 레이놀즈의 이야기를 듣고 레이놀즈를 인질로 삼아 탈옥을 결심한다.
