레오 거스키는 전쟁으로 헤어진 알마를 위해 그녀를 주인공으로 한 ‘사랑의 역사’라는 책을 써 알마에게 한 챕터씩 보낸다.그리고 몇 년이 흐른 뒤 첫사랑을 찾아 뉴욕에 온 레오에게 알마는 레오가 죽은 줄로만 알고 결혼을 했다며 레오를 거절한다.자기 목숨보다 사랑했던 여인에게 버림 받고 자신의 역작 ‘사랑의 역사’까지 읽어버린 레오는 친구 브루노와 함께 하루하루를 지루하게 살아간다.그러던 어느 날 알마와 자기 사이에 태어난 아들에게 자신에 대해 알리고 싶어진 레오는 아들에게 자신의 이야기를 담은 책을 보내게 되고… 곧 아들이 사망했다는 소식을 듣게 된다.이제 레오는 죽은 아들에게 보냈던 자신의 원고를 되찾기 위해 그의 집으로 향하게 된다.
