모니카가 퀸시의 옆집으로 이사를 오며 이야기는 시작된다. 퀸시는 남자 아이들보다 농구를 훨씬 잘하는 모니카에게 매력을 느껴 여자 친구가 되어달라고 하지만 이내 모니카와 퀸시는 티격태격하며 싸움이 그칠 날이 없다. 서로의 꿈을 키워가며 고등학교에 들어간 모니카와 퀸시는 서로 농구부에 들어가 각 남녀 농구팀에서 두각을 나타내고 친구가 아닌 연인 사이로 발전한다. 졸업후 농구부로 유명한 캘리포니아 대학에 입학한 두 사람. 오로지 농구만을 생각하는 모니카와 농구와 사랑을 병행하려는 퀸시는 갈등을 느끼게 되고, 한술 더떠서 부모님의 이혼 소동으로 방황하던 퀸시는 농구에만 집착하는 모니카에게 위안을 받지 못하고 헤어질 결심을 한다.
