닐은 애인 조운이 자살을 기도해 병문안을 가지만 곧 우울해져 그만둔다. 그러던 어느날 리지란 여인이 그에게 접근해 오고 닐은 그녀의 집으로 간다. 그 곳에서 리지의 남편 루와 조운을 만난다. 다시 조운과 잘해가기로 마음을 먹고 루가 닐에게 일자리를 소개해 준다. 닐은 불현듯 면접 때 입을 양복이 필요하다는 생각에 양복을 가지러 간다. 그러나 평소 닐을 마음에 두고 있는 체리를 불러내 달라는 해리의 부탁에 체리의 집에 전화를 걸어주나 전화를 엿들은 체리 엄마의 신고로 영문도 모른 채 닐은 경찰에 체포된다. 2주 만에 풀려난 닐은 리지의 집을 찾아가지만 집은 텅 비어 있는데...
