인명구조대라는 전화긴급 상담소를 운영하는 필립은 생애 최악의 크리스마스를 맞이하게 된다. 새해까지 사무실을 비워달라는 퇴거통고, 여자친구의 절교선언, 정체모를 상담자에게 사무실을 알려주는 실수 등이 연거푸 일어난다. 그의 부하 직원인 캐서린은 필립을 흠모하며 어머니를 모시고 사는 외로운 노처녀이고, 먼치믹 부인은 남편을 잃은 뒤 홀로사는 과부이다. 결국 이 모든 사람들이 승강기에 갇히는 사고가 발생하는데...
