히치하이킹을 하던 루이는 부유한 사업가인 엘르의 차를 얻어 탄다. 루이는 엘르의 공장과 그녀의 집 등을 방문하며 사람들의 다양한 이야기를 듣는다. 대사의 많은 부분은 레이몬드 챈들러나 윌리엄 포크너 등 문학을 인용했으며 여기에 고다르 특유의 나레이션도 더해진다.
