워싱턴포스트지의 정치부 기자 존은 명석한 두뇌와 특유의 직감으로 종횡무진 사건을 추적하는 촉망받는 기자다. 부와 명성 그리고 사랑스런 아내까지 모든 것을 다 가진 존은 스스로 행복한 남자라고 생각한다. 그러던 어느 날 함께 새집을 마련하러 다니던 아내가 의문의 자동차 사고로 죽게 된다. 실의에 빠진 존은 우연히 그녀가 죽기 직전 한 말을 떠올리게 된다. "당신은 사고 나기 전에 그걸 못 봤죠, 그렇죠? " 존은 아내가 남긴 이 한마디를 떨치지 못하고 그녀의 유품을 정리하던 존은 병원에서 혼수상태이던 그녀가 그린 이상한 그림을 발견한다. 나방모양의 형상을 한 귀신같은 것을 그려놓은 그녀의 스케치북을 본 존은 혼란에 빠진다. 그리고 2년 후, 존은 아내의 죽음, 이상한 그림과 관련한 사건과 다시 만나게 된다.
