6년간 일하던 카페가 폐업하면서 하루아침에 일자리를 잃은 루이자(에밀리아 클라크). 그녀는 새 직장을 찾던 중 집에서 가깝고 보수도 좋은 간병인 일을 찾게 되고, 면접을 본 그날 바로 채용이 결정된다. 하지만 루이자가 간병해야 할 윌(샘 클라플린)은 2년 전 사고로 전신마비 환자가 된 자신을 받아들이지 못하고 남에게 쌀쌀맞기 일쑤다. 어느 날 윌이 루이자에게 유독 심한 독설을 퍼붓자 루이자는 참지 못해 그의 태도를 따끔하게 지적하고, 그때부터 윌은 그녀에게 호감을 느끼기 시작한다. 두 사람이 점점 가까워지던 사이, 루이자는 윌이 존엄사를 계획하고 있음을 알게 되는데...
