직장을 잃고 실연까지 당한 마이크(Mike Shea/Elmo Barnett: 티모시 휴튼 분)는 새 생활을 다짐하며 캘리포니아로 가던 중 강 속에 빠진 차를 발견하고 타고 있던 사람들을 구출하려다 죽고 만다. 죽어서 천국에 간 마이크는, 그곳에서 애니(Annie Packert/Ally Chandler: 켈리 맥길리스 분)를 만나 사랑하게 되고, 둘은 결혼을 약속한다. 마이크는 앨리로 환생하여 지구로 내려간 애니를 만나기 위해 30년내에 두 사람이 재회하지 못하면 영원히 헤어진다는 조건부로 지구로 내려오게 된다. 엘모로 환생한 마이크는 영생의 행복을 찾기 위해 3십년간의 모험을 하게 된다.
