나이 든 노인 밀턴은 펜실베이니아 작은 마을에서 홀로 살아간다. 딸 데니스가 한 번씩 밀턴의 집에 들러 아빠의 상태를 확인한다. 그러던 어느 날, 외계 우주선이 밀턴의 집 뒷마당에 불시착한다. 그리고 우주선에서 나온 외계인이 정신을 잃고 쓰러진다. 밀턴은 911과 시의회에 이런 사실을 알리지만 아무도 그의 말을 믿지 않는다. 밀턴은 딸에게 연락하지만, 데니스는 전화는 물론 메시지도 받지 않는다. 밀턴은 외계인을 집 안으로 초대해 물과 음식을 제공한다. 밀턴은 회복한 외계인에게 집을 소개하고 마음을 터놓는다. 그 후 밀턴을 방문한 이웃 샌디가 외계인과 마주친다. 외계인은 손상된 우주선을 수리하기 시작한다. 밀턴은 캘리포니아에 거주하는 소원한 아들에게 전화한다. 한편 정부의 비밀 요원들이 지구에 추락한 외계인을 추적하는데...
