미국 동부의 평화롭던 작은 마을 노스필드는 1965년에 주정부의 수몰화 계획에 따라 저수지로 변하였다. 그후 30년이 지난 후 수몰 지역 인근에 사는 클레어 쿠퍼는 사연이 있는 듯한 어린 소년이 등장하는 꿈에 시달린다. 숲속의 길 잃은 여자 아이, 피묻은 남자의 손, 사과 과수원, 오래 전에 물에 잠긴 마을 등, 꿈에서 보았던 것들은 생활에 서서히 파문을 가져오지만 누구도 그녀의 꿈이 가지는 예지력을 믿으려 하지 않는다. 그러던 어느 날, 클레어의 딸 레베카가 유괴, 살해되자 클레어는 꿈속의 그 소녀가 바로 자신의 딸이었고, 범인은 자신의 꿈까지도 조종하고 있음을 알게 된다. 불우한 어린 시절에 대한 복수심에 사로잡힌 비비안 톰슨은 연쇄적으로 클레어의 주변 인물들을 하나씩 죽여가며 그녀를 자신에게로 유도하는데...
