미국 서북부 몬태나 주의 광활한 평원에는 자신의 길을 찾으려 애쓰는 세 명의 여성이 서로의 삶이 조금씩 연결된 채 살아가고 있다. 리빙스턴에 거주하는 변호사 로라는 피해보상을 받을 수 없는 사실을 받아들이지 못하는 변덕스러운 고객을 상대하기가 힘들다. 지나는 도시를 떠나 한적한 시골에서 꿈에 그리던 집을 지어 살고 싶지만, 이러한 바람이 너무 강력한 나머지 가족 및 이웃의 사이가 나빠지고 긴장감이 감돌게 된다. 벨프리의 어느 외딴 마을에는 수작업으로 겨울을 나는 외로운 목공이 살고 있다. 그녀는 자신이 다니는 야간학교의 선생님인 한 젊은 법대 졸업생과 어정쩡한 유대감을 쌓게 된다.
