1955년의 낭트를 배경으로 한 자크 드미의 뮤지컬 멜로드라마. 조선소에서 일하는 프랑수아는 여자친구 바이올렛이 있지만 가난한 형편 때문에 그녀와 결혼할 생각이 없다. 그러던 중 프랑수아는 불행한 결혼 생활을 하고 있는 에디트를 만나 뜨거운 사랑에 빠진다. 이들의 위태로운 삼각관계는 서서히 슬픈 결말을 향해 간다.
