상류층의 고급 창부와 어느 귀족 청년 사이의 사랑과 비극을 그린 작품으로 듀마 피스의 원작을 영화화 하였다. 오페라 <라 트라비아타>로서도 유명한 만큼 잘 알려진 스토리를 가진 작품이지만, "연기"라는 면에 있어서는 그레타 가르보의 대표작으로 꼽히며, 아카데미상 후보에 올려 놓았다. 당시로서는 신인 미남배우 로버트 테일러가 처음 큰 역을 맡은 작품이다.
