아파치족 인디언 마사이는 족장 제로니모가 백인들에게 항복한 후 부족의 다른 전사들과 함께 플로리다로 강제 압송된다. 끝까지 투쟁을 포기하지 않은 마사이는 도중에 탈출하여 부족에게 돌아가는데, 여행 도중 오클라호마에서 체로키 인디언들이 백인들과 동등하게 살고 있는 모습을 보게 된다. 마사이는 체로키 인디언이 준 옥수수 씨앗을 들고 부족들에게 새로운 삶을 설득하려 하지만 술에 찌들어 타락한 새족장 산토스는 그를 미군들에게 넘겨버린다. 다시 탈출한 마사이는 산토스의 딸 나린레를 납치하여 도망간다. 예전부터 그를 사랑하던 나린레는 마사이와 함께 산속에서의 생활을 시작하고, 두 사람은 옥수수 밭을 일구며 새삶을 준비한다.
