사랑하는 아내와 사별한 뒤 두 남매와 함께 알래스카의 퀸시에 정착한 항공기조종사 제이크. 비상물품을 운송하며 살아가던 그는 날씨가 좋지 않은 어느 날, 무리한 비행을 강행하다가 악마 봉이라 불리는 산 부근에서 조난을 당하고 만다. 평소에 어머니의 죽음을 아버지의 탓으로 돌리며 불편한 관계에 있던 아들 숀은 여동생과 함께 아버지를 찾아 나선다. 숀은 악마 봉으로 향하던 이들은 밀렵꾼에게 잡힌 아기곰 코비를 구출하고 이로 인해 밀렵꾼들에게 쫓기는 처지가 된다. 죽을 고비를 여러 차례 넘기고 아버지를 찾은 숀, 하지만 아버지를 구조할 무렵 로프가 풀어져 추락위기에 처하는데.
