アメリカ政府の要請で極秘裏に、太平洋の沖合にある海底基地に呼び集められた、心理学者ノーマン、生化学者ベス、数学者ハリーら、一流の学識者たち。彼らは、海底に約300年間沈んだままだという巨大宇宙船の調査を命じられ、その船内に入り込む。そこで彼らは正体不明の球体 "スフィア" を発見する。やがてハリケーンの接近で海上と連絡不通になり、海底基地が孤立する中、次々と奇怪な超常現象が一行を見舞うようになり…。
