1209年、アイルランド。そこは世界の果てとも呼べる島。 修道士の一行は修道院の神聖な聖遺物である「マティアの石」をローマに運ぶ巡礼の旅に出る。 だが、そこは数世紀にもわたり繰り返された部族間の戦争と上陸が活発化する侵略者ノルマン人らが横行する危険な旅路。信仰心の篤い、若き修道士ダーマッドと暗い過去をもつ口がきけない平修士らは、恐ろしい古代の迷信や盗賊たちに襲われながらも聖遺物を守り、旅を続ける。しかし、道中に巡礼を守るべく参加していた騎士レイモンドらが聖遺物の価値に目がくらみ、マティアの石を奪おうと目論んでいた――
