ある組織に雇われている殺し屋のアーサー・ビショップは、その完璧な仕事振りから“メカニック”と呼ばれていた。そんなアーサーに届いた次の指令は、組織の一員で古くからの友人ハリーの暗殺命令。いつものようにアーサーは仕事をこなし、ハリーは事故死と処理された。その葬式でアーサーはハリーの息子スティーヴに出会う。スティーヴに不思議な親近感を覚えたアーサーは彼を助手にしようと考え、プロの殺し屋に育てていく。
