中世のデンマーク。敬愛する父であり国王が死に、後を継いだ弟クローディアスによって、愛する母ゲートルードまで奪われた王子ハムレットは悲しみと絶望に打ちひしがれていた。ある夜、ハムレットの前に父の亡霊が現れ、自分は弟クローディアスに毒殺されたと告げる。復讐を誓い、その日から狂人を装うハムレットに父ポローニアスを殺された恋人のオフィーリアは次第に正気を失い、川に転落して死んでしまう。オフィーリアの兄レアティーズはハムレットを父と妹の仇と思い、クローディアスと組んでハムレットを毒殺しようとするのだった。
