1869, pour neutraliser son plus puissant ennemi, le démoniaque et richissime Dr Arliss Loveless, le président des États-Unis désigne deux agents spéciaux, James West et Artemus Gordon, choisis pour leurs compétences exceptionnelles. Si James West est un champion de l'humour à froid, charmeur et rusé, Artemus, lui, prône la réflexion et passe son temps à inventer des gadgets sophistiqués.
