Depuis dix-huit mois, un tueur en série prévient régulièrement de ses forfaits le FBI. L'agent LaCrosse, chargé de l’enquête, semble particulièrement visé. Le tueur finit par kidnapper son fils et continue de faire quelques victimes, signant, pour ainsi dire, ses crimes. Ce qui mène LaCrosse dans le district d'Amarillo au Texas.
