Une jeune femme nommée Hilda travaille pour les riches Clarksons, éleveurs de moutons, et rêve d’être une grande chanteuse. Une visite imminente de Sir Julian, un compositeur célèbre en provenance de Londres, pousse Mme Clarkson, une jalouse (une ingérence qui pense pouvoir chanter, mais ne peut pas), pour renvoyer Hilda. Il n'entend donc pas que Hilda a une bonne voix. . Pendant ce temps, un infâme hors-la-loi nommé Stingaree vient d’arriver en ville et kidnappe Sir Julian, puis se fait passer pour lui aux Clarksons, où il rencontre Hilda quelques heures avant son départ.
