Basé sur les souvenirs d'enfance de Jack Rosenthal, ce film se déroule durant l'été 1948. Alan, 14 ans, n'a que trois voeux: une paix durable, la victoire de l'Angleterre aux "Ashes" et pouvoir enfin embrasser sa camarade de classe Ann. Quand il est choisi pour jouer face à elle dans une pièce nécessitant un baiser , alors que son pays semble s'en sortir en cricket, la vie ne pourrait être meilleure.
