Harlan Regis, vétéran de la brigade criminelle de Washington, ayant tout vu et tout entendu, se croit à l'abri des surprises. Une nouvelle enquête va contredire ses certitudes. Le cadavre d'une jeune blonde, Carla, qui figurait parmi les conquêtes du fils du président, vient d'y être retrouvé dans les toilettes, et tout indique qu'elle a été poignardée à l'issue d'un rendez-vous amoureux dans les appartements de la première famille.
