A Rome en 1939, Stephen Fermoyle est ordonné cardinal. A cette occasion, il se souvient des principales étapes de sa vie. Natif de Boston, il seconde en 1917 le responsable d'une petite paroisse. Mais l'archevêque Glennon l'envoie au fin fond du Canada, où il devient le secrétaire particulier d'un prêtre malade. Lorsque sa soeur meurt en couche, il décide de retourner à la vie laïque.
