Modeste caissier, peintre à ses heures perdues, Cross vient au secours d'une jeune femme, Kitty, dont il devient fou amoureux. Celle-ci a un amant, Johnny. Avec la complicité de celui-ci, elle va manipuler Cross, en vendant ses tableaux sous son propre nom. Lorsqu'il découvre l'existence de Johnny, Cross décide de tuer Kitty.
