Paris, été 1891. Alors que la nouvelle de la mort de Vincent Van Gogh vient de tomber, Armand Roulin, fils d'un proche du peintre qui voyait d'un mauvais œil cette relation, est chargé de porter la nouvelle. Cependant, Armand réalise vite qu'il a mal jugé le peintre et se met en tête de comprendre son geste désespéré.
