Steve Gray, journaliste au Daily Star, a l'habitude de ramasser tous les autres journaux de la ville. Lorsque Henry Mander fait l'objet d'une enquête pour le meurtre de son partenaire commercial louche, Gray a une longueur d'avance sur la police dans la mesure où il dicte souvent son histoire avant qu'elle ne se produise. Il conduit la police dans une affaire «ouverte et fermée», ce qui a conduit Mander à être jugé, condamné et condamné à mort. La chroniqueuse Mary Shannon est amoureuse de Steve mais elle le voit lutter avec sa dernière histoire avant l'exécution de Mander. Quand elle commence à taper l'histoire de sa dictée enregistrée, elle comprend pourquoi.
