1918. La Première Guerre mondiale touche à sa fin et la grippe espagnole fait rage. Un pasteur rentre chez lui en Norvège pour fonder une congrégation, après avoir été missionnaire pendant plusieurs années à Madagascar. Avec l'aide d'une société minière locale, il commence à construire une église, mais l'endroit s'avère être un ancien cimetière sami du Sud. Lorsqu'il est décidé que les restes doivent être enlevés, un mal indéfinissable commence à hanter les colons.
