Au cours d’une violente tempête dans la Manche, John Sands qui dirige une société de renflouage monte à bord du Mary Deare, un cargo ‘fantôme’ qui semble en perdition. Il y découvre un homme étrange et sur la défensive, le Capitaine Patch, apparemment détenteur d’un lourd secret. Peu de temps après, Patch fait expressément échouer son bateau sur des récifs réputés dangereux. Pour quelles raisons ? Il ne veut pas immédiatement les dévoiler à son compagnon d’infortune mais il lui fait promettre de ne rien dire à ses futures juges en échange de sa vie qu’il a sauvé alors qu’il essayait d’accoster.
