Paul Giamatti, célèbre acteur américain, est en pleine crise existentielle. Il se cherche, peinant même à trouver le ton juste lors des répétitions de sa prochaine pièce, "Oncle Vania" de Tchekhov. Il entend alors parler de la "Banque des Âmes", laboratoire privé proposant un service des plus intrigants : soulager les patients de leur âme. Séduit, il décide de procéder à l'ablation de son âme. S'en suivent des réactions en chaîne dont il n'imaginait pas l'ampleur...
